You are not drinking to feel good. You are drinking to stop feeling wrong. This shift - from pleasure to regulation - is one of the clearest signals that dependency has taken hold.

When alcohol becomes baseline

The brain adapts to alcohol's presence. Over time, neural systems recalibrate around regular alcohol exposure, making sober states feel uncomfortable, anxious, or wrong by comparison. What once produced pleasure now produces a return to neutral. The drinking is no longer recreational. It is maintenance.

This is neurological, not motivational. The discomfort of sobriety in this context is real. It is also temporary. The brain recalibrates again when alcohol is removed, though the early period is genuinely difficult.

The Stoic reading

Epictetus wrote about appetite and desire: we do not desire what we do not have. What we have comes to seem necessary. This accurately describes tolerance and physical dependency. The mind has convinced itself it needs what it has simply learned to function with.

The Stoic practice here is not to argue yourself out of the feeling of needing it. It is to trust that the feeling is a product of adaptation - not truth - and to act on that trust despite the feeling.
